Scalabrini Centre Symposium on Access to Higher Education for Migrants and Refugees in South Africa
Relocating to a new country presents numerous challenges for migrants and refugees, including adjusting to a new environment, overcoming language barriers, and navigating limited financial resources. Pursuing higher education is another significant obstacle to achieving a better quality of life and greater job prospects. Fortunately, financial assistance and scholarships can play a pivotal role in helping young migrants, and refugees overcome these obstacles by eliminating the cost barrier and enabling them to pursue their ambitions, thereby improving their chances of securing better job opportunities.
The Harry Crossley and Doris Crossley Foundation had the opportunity to attend the Scalabrini Centre Symposium, which addressed the challenges surrounding access to higher education for migrants and refugees in South Africa. The event was made possible through the support of the UNHCR, Islamic Relief, and the HCI Foundation, among others. At the event, attendees heard inspiring stories from the keynote speaker, Dr Emmanuel Taban, and others, who shared their experiences as former refugees and how they overcame financial barriers through scholarships to achieve their educational aspirations.
It was clear from the symposium that financial barriers remain one of the most significant challenges faced by migrants and refugees seeking to pursue higher education. By providing financial support and scholarships to young migrants and refugees, we can ensure that young people from all walks of life have the chance to achieve their dreams and contribute to building a better world.
