DCF Adventures – Spier Segways

As part of our new undergraduate program with the Doris Crossley Foundation, we meet with our undergraduates twice a year for a day of connection, relaxation and fun. Over the past four years we have seen an increase in mental health concerns amongst university students and we feel that in order to support our students in a holistic way we need to create a safe place for our cohort to disconnect in order to reconnect.

This October we decided to meet at Spier Wine Farm in Stellenbosch to do a vineyard Segway tour and relax on their lawns with picnics. We were treated to the most spectacular Cape Town day, sun out and no wind. Our cohort was split into two, with the first 15 students on the Segways while the other 15 were allowed time to mingle, explore the farm and play games. Once the first group was back from their tour we swapped over.

After the fun challenge of learning how to Segway, enjoying the spectacular views of the Hottentots-Holland Mountains and the fresh air while we zoomed around the farm; we were able to relax under the beautiful big trees in front of the Spier deli. Each student was provided a picnic basket, filled with charcuterie, breads, chicken and veg as well as tasty pasteis de nata. Judging from the feedback this break was truly welcomed and enjoyed by all.

The Foundation wishes our undergraduates well during their exam season. We look forward to congratulating our some graduates at the end of this year and welcoming back those who continue in their courses in 2025.
