Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital

The Harry Crossley Foundation team spent the morning of the 15th of August at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, in Rondebosch, Cape Town, visiting three of the programs that are funded through the Foundation.

This included getting feedback from Professor Jo Wilmshurst and Helen Maintjies on the African Peadiatric Fellowship Program. As always it was especially meaningful to meet with some of the cohort and this time it was with a doctor from Malawi and one from Zimbabwe.

We then had a meeting with Prof Minette Coetzee who filled us in on developments at the Harry Crossley Children’s Nursing Development Unit. The Unit is working tirelessly to improve nursing practices for young patients and has developed an array of clinical courses plus online courses to advance this aim.

The Hospital School is also functioning well, and we had a moment in the art class with some aspiring young artist who were being kept busy while in treatment and recovery.

Visiting the Hospital and the team from the Children’s Hospital Trust always comes with a deep and abiding gratitude and respect for the men and women who work so tirelessly at this hospital and who are devoted to making the experience the least traumatic with the best outcome for each of their tiny patients. The Foundation is indebted to each and every one of them.
