“We can change the world and make it a better place.
It is in your hands to make a difference.”
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela
Working for the Harry Crossley Foundation has always been a privilege for us whereby we get to aide wonderful organisation and projects year round in their endeavours to make a difference in South Africa. Mandela Day allows us a moment to step away from our desks and excitedly get involved. This year we joined one of our funded projects, Ladles of Love, in their endeavour to come together as a community and make a difference to those less fortunate.
On a very wet and rainy Mandela Day, 18 July 2022, Ladles of Love attempted to break a World Record. This event took place at two South African venues simultaneously: Nelson Mandela Square, Johannesburg – the South African flag mosaic; and Cape Town International Convention Centre, Foreshore – A portrait of Nelson Mandela mosaic. The Ladles of Love website reports “A total of 88,000 food cans were placed across the two cities by volunteers who worked together to ensure the mosaics came to life in the most extraordinary way. By late afternoon on 18 July, the two venues announced that they had exceeded the number of food cans and square meterage of the existing world record. Resulting in the world record being smashed to smithereens!”
In addition to this, another record was broken for the largest number of volunteers paying to spend 67 minutes on Mandela Day in service, to grow children in need. A total of 12 267 volunteers! The Harry Crossley Foundation employees opted to participate at the sandwich making station. It was a sticky and vibrant affair with wonderful music to keep everyone jamming. A total of 125,000 sandwiches were made. A wonderful exhibition of what can easily be achieved when we all come together. We were so proud to participate in such a wonderful and exciting event and want to thank Danny Diliberto, Ladles of Love and all those that worked so hard to make this event possible.
