Strengthening Teaching and Learning: The Huddle Learning Programme

The Harry Crossley Foundation supports the South African Improved Learning Initiative (SAILI)  Huddle Learning Programme, an initiative designed to strengthen teaching quality, improve learner engagement, and enhance academic outcomes in under‑resourced schools.

Huddle places teachers at the centre of improved learning. Through a year‑long professional development programme, educators receive structured training, personalised coaching, and access to a digital library of resources, including model lessons and instructional videos that support effective classroom practice.

Learners benefit directly from the programme as well, receiving Huddle workbooks built around the national curriculum, offering structured support in Natural Sciences, History, Mathematics, and English. Learners also have access to lesson videos, which reinforce key concepts and help them engage more confidently with the material.

HCF visited Pelican Park High School to observe the programme in action in three Grade 8 classes. We saw teachers implementing Huddle pedagogy using instructional videos and guided lesson structures, and learners actively engaging with both their workbooks and the digital content. Students shared their favourite Huddle subjects and spoke about how the workbooks and teaching style have helped them improve academically.

This partnership reflects our ongoing commitment to strengthening education systems and supporting the educators who make quality learning possible.
