“I am immensely grateful for the support the Harry Crossley Foundation has provided to me to complete my studies. Subsequently, I have also taken the support the foundation has shown me as a form of affirmation in continuing to pursue food studies work within South Africa. Through this year I have learnt how passionate I am about this mode of inquiry and the importance of filling this gap within the South African— and African, as a whole— academe. I hope to continue my studies with the goals of working towards establishing a food studies programme on, and for, the continent.”

Alice Piller, BMedScHons, Bioinformatics, UCT
“The HCF funding relieved a significant burden on my family, allowing me to fully engage and appreciate the education I received. I believe this greatly aided in my studies and resulted in me achieving top marks in the Honours programme. I plan to continue with research in South Africa, specifically in communicable diseases such as TB, to extend the value of my education to others.”

Ashraf Moosa, BMedScHons, Neuroscience and Physiology, UCT
“Embarking on my journey in Neuroscience was a leap of faith that proved to be richly rewarding. The invaluable financial assistance from the Harry Crossley Foundation was a significant pillar of support during my Honours year, facilitating an environment where I could deeply engage with my project on microdialysis of ventricular cerebrospinal fluid without any distractions. The opportunity to delve into intricate research, especially focusing on the central nervous system’s unique pharmacokinetics and antibiotic treatment regimens, has been an unparalleled experience. As I stand on the threshold of my future career, I am driven to employ the knowledge and experience gained to revolutionise healthcare, particularly in low-income countries. The generosity of the Harry Crossley Foundation has indeed ignited a flame of purpose that I aim to carry forward throughout my career in medicine.”

Dr. George Mbella Teke, PhD Chemical Engineering, SU
“As an international student funding is vital should you finish your studies on due time, and HCF did play a great role in facilitating this process for me. I can’t be grateful enough to the staff and everyone that help in the process, but just a thank you for the work you do for young Africans like myself. To those wishing to apply, I give you my full support as studying under the funds of HCF was an amazing time, especially as they do check up with reports to actually see progress as opposed to others that feel funds given is the most important, this check spare you to work further.”

The opportunity and process of doing qualitative research has helped me grow as a researcher, global citizen and as a person. I am excited to say that a PhD is next on my agenda.”

“The HCF bursary enabled me as an MSc student to complete my studies without the worry of needing to work while studying to support myself. It was a privilege to be awarded this bursary and I will be forever grateful to the HCF for giving me the opportunity to achieve my goal of an MSc in Chemistry (cum laude). Now that I have completed my studies, I have entered the business world and started my own online tutoring business, POP Tutors, to help high school and university students to excel in their STEM subjects.
