The Children’s Hospital Trust in Cape Town have been working hard to raise funds to move the Orthopaedic Unit from the Maitland Cottage Hospital in Newlands onto the main Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital site.
On the 17th April 2024, the Harry Crossley Foundation team attended the exciting ground breaking for this new facility at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. The Foundation has proudly contributed to this project over the passed two years and were thrilled to see the commencement of this building. We congratulate the Children’s Hospital Trust on all their hard work, dedication and perseverance to seeing this project actualised and we look forward to seeing the final result in the future.
Due to Maitland Cottage closing down, the Trust received a request to build a new orthopaedic ward at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. The patients treated in the unit are typically neonatal to early adolescence and include those requiring surgical admissions (long stay and day cases), post-traumatic rehabilitation, post-infectious inpatient care (including TB), non-operative inpatient management (rehab, traction), and acute infections.

The overall goal of the project is the construction and equipping of a new cutting edge 30-bed Orthopaedic Unit at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. This transformative project aims to create a state-of-the-art facility to ensure that children receive the care they need in one place.
The establishment of a dedicated Orthopaedic Unit at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital promises to: Transform the delivery of orthopaedic care by offering specialized services and multidisciplinary care in a single visit.
This initiative not only saves caregivers valuable time and travel expenses but also ensures comprehensive and efficient treatment for young patients. This model will enhance efficiency by contributing to optimisation of hospital resources and ensuring streamlined operations from from intake and treatment to care.
We were thrilled to be at the ground breaking event and celebrate this historical day at the hospital.
