Little Lions recently held a special event at the Kuyasa Library in Khayelitsha to celebrate World Mental Health Day and launch a public art and mental health campaign. The organisation works with children aged eight to thirteen, providing mental health support and guidance to help them navigate their emotions and build resilience.
HCF proudly supports their fellowship programme, which provides a structured curriculum for youth to learn about mental health and become mental health advocates within their communities.
The campaign showcased the work of South African artist Mikhaillia Petersen, featuring portraits of twelve young boys from the Little Lions coaching programmes. This initiative is part of a broader effort to highlight the urgent mental health crisis facing children across South Africa, particularly young boys in under-resourced communities. The portraits of these young participants are now on display in public spaces across Khayelitsha, serving as powerful reminders that every child has a story worth telling.
The event also featured “Reimagining Themba,” a play about a young lion searching for his mane. The story was designed to teach children important lessons about self-confidence, resilience, and personal growth. Children from across Khayelitsha attended the performance, enjoying a day filled with creativity, inspiration, and learning.
