The Harry Crossley Foundation team headed out to Stellenbosch on the 20th of August to meet with the MOVE4FOOD team at the University of Stellenbosch. The #Move4Food fundraising campaign was launched in August 2018 with the goal of raising funds to help sustain the food security initiatives at Stellenbosch University.
We met with Lizzie Witbooi along with the MOVE4FOOD representative on the Tygerberg campus. The sad realisation is that students on this campus and most other campuses in South Africa are experiencing very real food insecurity and that they are often hungry. This crisis which is facing most tertiary institutions stems in the main from the reduction in grant value for NSFAS students – the result is that students do not have sufficient funds to cover the year expenses and that they often go hungry. Stellenbosch University is trying to ensure that these students get at least one meal a day if they are in residence and they are providing small grants to help with food to the most severely affected. We are pleased to report that the Harry Crossley Foundation are assisting with a grant to try help address this crisis. The need for more assistance was apparent.
