Tygerberg Hospital Cochlear Implant Unit

One of the smaller programs that Harry Crossley Foundation provides funding for is the Cochlear Implant Porgam at Tygerberg Hospital in the Western Cape. The Harry Crossley Foundation funds are used for the purchase of and maintenance of Cochlear devices (or upgrades) for patients who cannot afford to do so for themselves. In addition to this, the Foundation also provides funding which allows for the employment of a speech therapist at the Carol de Toit Centre. The implant of the cochlear device is just the start of a long process which includes countless hours of speech therapy.

The Foundation are profoundly grateful to the head of the unit, Ms. Jenny Perold and the speech therapist, Ms. Barbara Kellet. The work being done in this unit is nothing short of magical and it is always a pleasure to visit with them and to see firsthand the impact that hearing has on those who are either born deaf or lose hearing along the way. Our visit took place on the 3rd of September and provided much thought for the road ahead
