Project Flamingo Performs 39 Life-Changing Surgeries on Mandela Day

Breast cancer surgery waiting lists are increasing across South Africa, creating significant challenges for patients and the public healthcare system. Project Flamingo is stepping in with compassion, skill, and determination to help close this critical gap.

With a team made up of volunteer surgeons, nurses, anaesthetists, and other dedicated medical professionals, Project Flamingo conducts breast cancer catch-up surgeries at five public hospitals: Groote Schuur, Tygerberg, George Regional, Livingstone, and Cecilia Makiwane Hospitals, located in the Eastern and Western Cape Provinces.

In addition to providing critical surgeries, the organisation takes a holistic approach to patient care by offering emotional and psychosocial support throughout the treatment journey, while also working to strengthen the public healthcare systems in which they operate.

39 Surgeries for Mandela Day

This Mandela Day, the project achieved something extraordinary: 39 breast cancer surgeries were performed in a single coordinated effort across the five participating hospitals. These procedures were more than just operations; they were life-changing interventions for women whose lives have been profoundly impacted by breast cancer.

One of the many highlights of the day came from the passionate and skilled team at George Regional Hospital, who seamlessly facilitated their surgeries with deep care and professionalism. Their commitment captured the spirit of Mandela Day – a day dedicated to service, unity, and hope.
