Sozo Foundation: Empowering Vrygrond’s Young People

The Sozo Foundation is driven by a mission to uplift the youth in the Vrygrond community in the Western Cape, an area grappling with high school dropout rates, unemployment, and limited economic prospects. Their mission is to empower young individuals with the skills and knowledge essential for thriving within their community. The foundation places a strong emphasis on education, skill development, and entrepreneurship, and their efforts are channelled through four pivotal programs: an After School Program, two social enterprises tailored for advanced training, and an incubation hub designed to foster youth-led micro-business development.

The Harry Crossley Foundation had the honour of providing support to the Sozo Foundation in the creation of their community-based incubation hub. Located within the Capricorn Business Park, Sozo acquired and, with the support of HCF, meticulously renovated the building. With this facility, the Sozo Foundation is poised to extend its range of programs, including a business accelerator program, a coding course, and a hospitality and tourism internship program.

A standout feature of this facility is its convenience for the youth of Vrygrond, given its proximity within walking distance. Furthermore, by providing entrepreneurship and business programs, these young individuals not only acquire the essential resources to initiate and develop their businesses but also find themselves in the advantageous setting of a business park. This not only gives them access to vital networking opportunities but also a chance to learn from the diverse businesses and professionals operating within the park’s vicinity.

We are excited to see the impact of these initiatives as young people start their businesses, develop their skills, and contribute to the betterment of their communities.
